“It’s the End of the World as We Know It… and I Feel Fine”: A Christian Response to Chaos

Have you ever listened to R.E.M.‘s song It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine) and thought, That sounds a lot like how I feel today?

The lyrics are a whirlwind of chaos—earthquakes, political unrest, media noise, confusion, fear, and a world that seems to be spinning faster than anyone can control. Written nearly forty years ago, the song somehow feels as relevant today as it did in 1987.

Every day we are bombarded with headlines about wars, economic uncertainty, political division, natural disasters, moral confusion, and social unrest. News alerts buzz on our phones. Social media amplifies every crisis. Everyone has an opinion, and most of them seem to be shouting.

For many people, the constant noise creates anxiety, fear, and hopelessness.

Yet as Christians, we have a unique perspective.

The world may seem chaotic, but our confidence was never supposed to be rooted in the stability of the world.

Jesus told us this would happen.

“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

Notice that Jesus did not promise a trouble-free life. He promised His presence and His victory.

When I listen to that chorus—“It’s the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine”—I can’t help but think of the peace that believers can experience even when circumstances are anything but peaceful.

Not because we’re ignoring reality.

Not because we don’t care.

Not because we aren’t concerned.

But because we know who is still on the throne.

The Bible is full of examples of God’s people living through uncertainty. Noah faced a flood. Joseph endured betrayal and imprisonment. Esther confronted political upheaval. Daniel lived in exile. The early church faced persecution.

None of them experienced ideal circumstances.

Yet they remained faithful because their trust was in God, not their environment.

Today, Christians are called to do the same.

When the news cycle feels overwhelming, we remember that God is sovereign.

When culture shifts, we remember that truth does not.

When fear spreads, we remember that God’s promises remain unchanged.

Isaiah wrote:

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” (Isaiah 26:3)

That is what allows believers to “feel fine” when the world feels unstable.

It’s not a confidence rooted in ourselves.

It’s a confidence rooted in Christ.

The reality is that every generation has looked around at some point and thought the world was falling apart. Yet through every empire, every war, every economic collapse, every cultural shift, and every crisis, God has remained faithful.

He is still faithful today.

So when the headlines scream chaos, when social media predicts disaster, and when the future feels uncertain, Christians can respond differently.

We can pray instead of panic.

We can trust instead of tremble.

We can serve instead of hide.

We can hope instead of despair.

Because while the world may feel like it’s changing by the hour, our Savior never changes.

And that is why, even when it feels like the end of the world as we know it, we can still be at peace.

We know the One who holds the beginning, the end, and everything in between. 🙏💕🙌
